The newly launched Canon EOS R5 provides three distinct ways to capture timelapse sequences, and help you understand which method suits your needs best.
Firstly, there's PHOTO MODE aka INTERVAL TIMER. This mode enables you to shoot full-resolution RAWs, CR2s, or JPEGs at the same time using an in-built intervalometer. It remns unclear if it supports HEIF photo format like on the 1DXMkIII. The minimum interval is set to one second, with a max count of only 99 shots - quite limiting.

Secondly, transitioning to movie mode brings TIMELAPSE MOVIE mode into play. With this feature, you have the flexibility of capturing video footage in FHD, UHD, or 8K resolutions using the Canon EOS R5.
However, there's a disappointing aspect - it only records video frames encoded with HEVC codec and does not capture RAWs or JPEGs simultaneously. The minimum interval here is two seconds, which I do not compreh.
The team at Canon Australia provided additional insights to some of my queries:
1 Can you record timelapse videos in CLOG format on EOS R5? No
2 Are there any settings for using the fully electronic shutter to capture time-lapses in photo or video modes? Yes
3 In the photo intervalometer mode, can adjustments be made manually after each shot taken in full manual? Yes
4 Can I shoot timelapse footage in RAW format? Yes, with the interval timer mode. In TIMELAPSE MOVIE shooting mode, it won't output raw videos only MP4's.
5 What is the maximum shutter speed range for Auto ISO settings during time-lapse movie shooting? During TIMELAPSE MOVIE shooting, the Auto ISO range spans from 400-26500. The shutter speed ranges between 14000 to 30 seconds.
6 Is there a limit on the number of photographs taken in Interval Mode? Yes, when using unlimited mode, you can take as many shots as you want until you manually stop it. If choosing a specific number, this option caps at just 99 shots.
7 Does photo-timelapse mode offer any smoothing or ramping features? Moreover, is there a maximum shutter speed setting external or an Interval priority setting internal? Can it automatically ramp the shutter speed to its maximum before adjusting ISO levels?
