Canon to Discontinue Repair Services for Many Older Camera Models by 2030

Read: 2201

A recent post by Jaymes Dempsey of Digital Photography School has revealed that Canon plans to discontinue repr services for many of its older cameras and lenses. According to CR, the Japanese branch of Canon's website lists upcoming -of-support dates for the company’s camera products.

Canon Japan has made a list on its website which includes detls about when specificwill no longer receive mntenance support. The majority of Canon's EOS R series are expected to continue being serviced, while numerous DSLRs and most of the EOS M lineup might lose this service by the of this decade. Products not listed in this document are still awting their respective support dates.

Here is a brief timeline for Canon’s cameras:

EOS 5D Mark III: March 2024

EOS M3: July 2024

EOS M10: September 2024

EOS 6D: September 2025

EOS M5: February 2026

EOS M100: November 2026

EOS 7D Mark II: January 2027

EOS M6: March 2027

EOS 5Ds: May 2027

EOS 80D: October 2027

EOS 5Ds R: August 2028

EOS M6 Mark II: March 2029

EOS R: November 2029

Many of Canon's latest DSLRs, such as the EOS 5D Mark IV and the EOS 6D Mark II, are listed with an unclear TBD status for repr support through until at least the of 2029. However, most older DSLRs including nearly all of the EOS M series cameras will become ineligible for reprs before we hit 2030.

This development isn't unexpected given that Canon hasn't introduced new DSLRs or EOS M cameras in recent years, and their push towards a single mirrorless system likely means the for traditional DSLR and dedicated APS-C mirrorless series. It also underscores the reality of transitioning from a legacy platform to a newer one which can have significant impacts on users’ equipment longevity.

For those who wish to continue using their older Canon devices past these support dates, they will be able to seek reprs through indepent services or third-party vors, but this is not what most Canon users prefer. When issues with their equipment arise, many might now be compelled to upgrade.
