Embrace an immersive visual journey spanning over five decades as you explore the pioneering photographic works created by Kamoinge, a groundbreaking collective established in New York City back in 1963 during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement. Comprising some of America's most esteemed photographers, this is the first comprehensive compilation featuring the work of Kamoinge's thirty members since their establishment from 1963 through to 2014.
After being largely unrecognized by major museums amidst racial barriers throughout its existence, the Kamoinge Workshop has finally asced into rightful prominence as a seminal force within American photography history and the longest-standing photographic collective. The significant traveling exhibition Working Together: The Photographers of the Kamoinge Workshop launched in 2020 at Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and will subsequently travel to Whitney Museum of American Art, J.Paul Getty Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum among others.
Several original members from Kamoinge were also spotlighted in the international exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, which kicked off at Tate Modern London before moving to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, The Broad Museum and de Young Museum, concluding at Museum of Fine Arts Houston.
In this spectacular compium, over 280 photographs are interwoven with insightful commentary from the Kamoinge members themselves alongside renowned authors. These images capture New York City life, West African scenes, Guyana landscapes, suburban America as well as abstracts and dly moments of men, women, children, and iconic portrts including that of Miles Davis, Biggie Smalls, Ntozake Shange among others.
Timeless: Photographs by Kamoinge was prsed by New York Times as one of the best photography books of 2015.
